Dermapen is a microneedling treatment that aims to support the skin’s natural renewal process by creating controlled microchannels on the skin surface. In this method, very fine needles come into contact with the skin at specific depths and create a controlled stimulation. The aim is not to damage the skin, but to activate its self-repair mechanism. Through this process, the skin is intended to appear more vibrant, smoother and more balanced. For this reason, Dermapen should not be considered only as a classic skin care treatment; it should be evaluated as a professional procedure that needs to be planned according to the skin structure and individual needs.
Dermapen is especially preferred to help improve skin texture, reduce a dull appearance, minimise the appearance of pores, and support a more refined look in acne scars and superficial skin irregularities. The needle depth used during the treatment is determined according to the person’s skin type, sensitivity level and the area to be treated. Therefore, applying the same treatment intensity to everyone would not be appropriate. For sensitive skin, skin prone to redness, active acne or dermatological conditions, a specialist assessment should be carried out before the procedure.

Dermapen is most commonly preferred for acne scars, visible pores, uneven skin tone, dull appearance, fine lines and rough skin texture. After acne, indentations, colour differences or textural irregularities may remain on the skin. Dermapen treatment may help achieve a smoother and more balanced appearance by supporting the skin’s renewal process in these areas. However, the depth of the scars, skin type, age, session schedule and post-treatment care directly affect the result. Therefore, expecting completely smooth skin after a single session may not be realistic.
Skin blemishes, colour unevenness caused by sun exposure and loss of elasticity that occurs with ageing are also among the concerns for which Dermapen may be preferred. When the skin’s collagen support decreases over time, a duller appearance, fine lines and a tendency towards laxity may develop. Dermapen can be considered a supportive skin care method that helps the skin look more vibrant, firmer and fresher. However, for deep wrinkles, advanced sagging, active infections or intense pigmentation, it may not be sufficient on its own; in such cases, it may need to be planned together with different treatments.
Before Dermapen treatment, the skin is cleansed and the person’s skin structure is assessed. A treatment plan is created by considering skin type, sensitivity level, pigmentation pattern, acne scar intensity, pore appearance and the general condition of the skin barrier. After the treatment area is cleared of make-up, oil, dirt and product residue, the skin is prepared for the procedure. Where necessary, a topical numbing cream may be used before the treatment to increase comfort. The Dermapen device is then moved over the skin in controlled motions, and microchannels are created on the skin surface with the help of very fine needles.
During the procedure, mild stinging, redness, warmth and sensitivity may be considered normal. The duration of the treatment varies depending on the area being treated; the face alone can be completed in a shorter time, while the duration may be longer if the neck, décolletage or other areas are included. During the procedure, supportive serums suitable for the skin’s needs may be used; however, these products should not be chosen at random. After the treatment is completed, the skin is soothed, moisturised and suitable care recommendations are given to protect it against external factors. Although redness is usually temporary, a specialist should be contacted in cases of intense burning, prolonged sensitivity or unexpected reactions.
The main aim of skin preparation before Dermapen is to make the skin suitable for treatment without weakening the skin barrier. A few days before the procedure, intensive peeling, exfoliating acid-based products, strong skin care products containing retinol, harsh scrubbing, sunbeds and treatments that may sensitise the skin should be avoided. The more balanced and calm the skin is before the procedure, the more comfortable the recovery process can be afterwards. The procedure may be postponed on skin that is sunburnt, irritated, has open wounds or shows signs of active infection.
Before the treatment, any medicines being used, existing skin conditions, and previous laser, chemical peeling or similar procedures should be shared with the specialist. Use of blood-thinning medicines, active acne treatments, a history of cold sores or sensitive skin structure may affect the treatment plan. On the day of the procedure, it is important that the skin is free from heavy make-up, thick oil-based products and irritating active ingredients. Aggressive cleansing by the person themselves is not appropriate; the skin should be prepared gently and the procedure should be performed under professional hygiene conditions.
After Dermapen, the skin becomes more sensitive, so the care process should be managed carefully in the first few days. Redness, mild burning, dryness, tightness or sensitivity may occur, and these signs are usually temporary. During this period, peeling products, acid-based products, retinol, harsh cleansers, scrubbing, hot steam, sauna, hammam and intense exercise that may irritate the skin should be avoided. Skin cleansing should be done with gentle products, the skin should not be left dehydrated, and soothing care products recommended by the specialist performing the procedure should be preferred.
Sun protection is one of the most important care steps after Dermapen. While the skin is in the renewal process, it may be more sensitive to the sun, which can increase the risk of pigmentation. Therefore, sunscreen should not be neglected, and long periods under direct sunlight should be avoided. If mild flaking or dryness occurs after the treatment, the flakes should not be picked, the skin should not be rubbed and hygiene should be maintained. It is important that pillowcases, towels and surfaces that come into contact with the skin are clean. If redness lasts longer than expected, or intense swelling, an inflamed appearance or pain occurs, a specialist should be consulted without delay.
